Is My Business Showing Up in AI Search Results?

Most business owners assume strong Google rankings mean they'll automatically be recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Here's why that assumption is costing you visibility — and how to fix it.

Is My Business Showing Up in AI Search Results?

If someone asks me, “Is my business showing up in AI search results?” my answer is almost always the same:

Maybe — but we can check.

That’s an important distinction because most business owners assume that if they’re ranking well on Google, they’ll automatically be recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Perplexity. Unfortunately, that’s simply not how AI search works.

I’ve seen businesses dominate traditional Google search while barely appearing in AI recommendations. I’ve also seen companies with average Google rankings become some of the most recommended businesses inside AI platforms.

The two are connected, but they are not the same.

SEO and AI Visibility Are Not the Same Thing

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that AI optimization is just another name for SEO.

It isn’t.

Traditional SEO is focused on helping your website rank in Google’s search results. That means optimizing for keywords, backlinks, technical SEO, page speed, authority, and hundreds of ranking signals within Google’s algorithm.

AI search is different.

When someone asks ChatGPT or Gemini a question like:

  • “Who is the best roofing company in Kelowna?”
  • “What’s the most durable rubber resurfacing product?”
  • “Who should I hire for an artificial grass installation near me?”

The AI isn’t simply listing the first ten Google results. Instead, it’s trying to recommend businesses it believes are the best answer to the user’s question.

That means visibility in AI search is based on an entirely different set of signals than traditional search rankings.

The First Step Is Finding Out If You’re Being Recommended

Before making any changes, I want to know one thing:

Is your business already being recommended?

Most business owners have no idea. They assume they must be showing up because their website ranks well on Google or because they’ve invested in SEO for years. Sometimes that’s true. Many times it isn’t.

Rather than guessing, we test it.

How We Audit AI Visibility

Our process starts with the questions your potential customers are actually asking. Every business is different, so we identify the most valuable prompts for your industry and your location.

For example, instead of searching your business name, we’ll ask questions your future customers would naturally ask, such as:

  • Who is the best company for my service?
  • Which products last the longest?
  • What does this service typically cost?
  • Which business would you recommend in my city?

We then test those prompts across the major AI platforms. That includes checking whether:

  • Your business is recommended
  • How often you’re mentioned
  • Which competitors appear instead
  • Which platforms you’re strongest on
  • Which platforms you’re completely missing from

Once we know where you stand, we can build a strategy specifically designed to improve your visibility. Instead of guessing what might work, we’re working from real data.

A Real Example

One of the companies we’ve worked with specializes in rubber resurfacing. When we first checked their AI visibility, we wanted to see how they appeared when people asked questions about product quality, durability, pricing, and overall recommendations.

After implementing our optimization process, something interesting happened. The business began appearing in AI recommendations across platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Almost immediately, we saw an increase in website traffic. That wasn’t because Google suddenly changed its rankings. It happened because more people were discovering the company through AI-generated recommendations.

That’s exactly why AI visibility matters.

Why Good Businesses Often Don’t Show Up

One of the biggest surprises for business owners is discovering that having a great website isn’t enough anymore. You can have years of SEO work behind you and still be nearly invisible inside AI platforms.

The reason is simple. Google is primarily trying to rank web pages. AI is trying to recommend businesses. Those are two very different goals.

Today’s AI platforms are looking for trustworthy businesses that deserve to be suggested when someone asks for advice. That’s a completely different experience than typing keywords into a traditional search engine.

AI Search Is Changing How Customers Find Businesses

Consumer behavior is changing quickly. Instead of searching ten websites and comparing them manually, people are increasingly asking AI assistants questions like:

  • “Who should I hire?”
  • “What’s the best option?”
  • “What would you recommend?”

When AI provides an answer, it often recommends only a handful of businesses. Sometimes it recommends only one. If your business isn’t being mentioned, you’re invisible to that customer.

That’s why businesses need to start thinking beyond Google rankings.

My Opinion After Watching This Industry Change

I’ve spent years working in digital marketing, and I believe AI visibility will become one of the most important marketing strategies businesses invest in over the next several years. That doesn’t mean SEO is going away. SEO is still important. But treating AI optimization like it’s simply “SEO with a different name” is a mistake.

They’re different disciplines with different objectives. Businesses that understand that difference today will have a significant advantage as AI search continues to grow.

The Bottom Line

If there’s one thing I want business owners to remember, it’s this:

Traditional SEO and AI visibility are not the same thing.

More importantly, if you’re not paying attention to how your business appears inside AI platforms, there’s a good chance your competitors are. The businesses that begin optimizing for AI recommendations now will be in a much stronger position as customer search habits continue to evolve.

The good news is you don’t have to guess whether you’re showing up. You can measure it. And once you know where you stand, you can start building a strategy that helps your business become one of the companies AI recommends instead of one that gets overlooked.
